Introduction
Community pharmacists are faced with a challenging situation - to provide high quality patient care to all customers with limited time. Responding to minor symptoms and referring major illness is a major part of community pharmacist's role. The trend of self-care has prompted an increasing number of people to visits their local pharmacies for initial medical advice that is recognised as a valuable resource. However community pharmacists are under more pressure than ever to arm with the knowledge to manage a growing number of symptoms not just for adults but for children as well, and to recommend appropriate advise and treatments.
This free online self-learning package is designed with the special needs of children and their carers in mind: supporting community pharmacists in acquiring knowledge of childhood ailments, their treatments and when it is appropriate to refer. The package can be done in your own time, and is designed to make the process of learning fun, easy and meaningful.

This learning package is designed to help you learn using a variety of teaching tools:

  • Written text describing common childhood ailments commonly presented to the community pharmacist.
  • Case studies with integrated questions - attempt to answer the questions using suggested texts or web links to broaden your knowledge.
  • Answers can be revealed and read as text (but we suggest you just use these to Check your own answers as you are more likely to remember the answers and have a thorough understanding of the topic by doing it this way).
  • Practice activities for exercises which will not only further expand your knowledge, but also give you useful tools and documents to use on a regular basis in your own practice.
  • Portfolio activities, designed to expand your learning in lateral ways. These may include activities such as critical reviews of specific issues or medicines related to the chosen minor ailment.

This package also allows you to self assess and obtain a certificate:

  • There are multiple choice questions covering some of the essential issues which we hope you will have learned having followed the learning activities. This can be attempted as often as you like until you have them all right.
  • Print off an official certificate when you have achieved 100% for an individual minor ailment to include in your Continuing Professional Development (CPD) folder.
(CPD is a individual activity and whilst we accept that you can use this package by going straight to the multiple choice questions and just retrying the answers until you have 100%, there is no benefit in doing this. This package is aimed at letting you learn and assess in your own time and own way.)
